Commencing with a list of Council members present: Benjamin Guy Babington; George Bowdler Buckton; William Benjamin Carpenter; Warren De La Rue; Sir Philip de Malpas Grey Egerton; Captain Douglas Galton; Robert Godwin-Austen; Joseph Dalton Hooker; James Clerk Maxwell; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; James Joseph Sylvester; Charles Wheatstone; the Reverend Robert Willis; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. The nomination of Heinrich Gustav Magnus as a Foreign Member was approved by ballot. Information had been received of the death of Jacob Steiner, voiding his nomination as a Foreign Member, and of the death of M. Despretz of Paris. List of candidates for Foreign Membership from which two names would be nominated at the next meeting. Letter from Dr. Odling requesting on behalf of the Chemical Society to have impressions of plates for Dr. Gilbert's lecture, granted. Selection of candidates for Fellowship was considered and adjourned until the next meeting. Bill for payment, for Scholl's gas fittings for the late illumination.
