Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Benjamin Carpenter; Warren De La Rue; Captain Douglas Galton; Robert Godwin-Austen; John Lubbock; James Clerk Maxwell; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; James Joseph Sylvester; Charles Wheatstone; the Reverend Robert Willis; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. The Secretary reported that assent had been given to an application from the Civil Service Commissioners for the use of rooms to hold examinations for the Civil Service of India. Letter from Lord Lyttleton requesting permission to hold the annual meeting of the Council of the Working Men's Club and Institute Union at Burlington House; the request granted. Correspondence on the Melbourne Telescope to be printed for private circulation in continuance of the Correspondence of the Southern Telescope Committee, already printed. Nominations of Ernst E. Kummer and Johannes Japetus Smith Steenstrup as Foreign Members confirmed by ballot. Candidates for Royal Society Medals proposed and seconded with brief citations. List of bills for payment, for engraving, lithography, and coals.
