Commencing with a list of Council members present: Benjamin Guy Babington; George Bowdler Buckton; William Benjamin Carpenter; Captain Douglas Galton; Joseph Dalton Hooker; John Lubbock; James Clerk Maxwell; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; Richard Owen; William Sharpey; Henry John Stephen Smith; George Gabriel Stokes; James Joseph Sylvester; Charles Wheatstone; the Reverend Robert Willis; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Report of the committee formed to consider improvements in publishing the Proceedings, full text entered into the minutes: giving information on the numbers of copies circulated, including to Chemical Society and Royal Irish Academy members, with costs; recommendations include more regular publication, the raising of subscription to ten shillings per year, and a specimen page submitted to demonstrate better use of text; the report was received and adopted. Appointment of auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. List of President, Officers and Members of Council to be recommended for election at the approaching Anniversary Meeting, to serve in the ensuing year. The Library of the Royal College of Surgeons to be placed on the list as entitled to receive Philosophical Transactions. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: the Copley Medal awarded to Adam Sedgwick for original observations and discoveries in geology; a Royal Medal awarded to the Reverend Miles J. Berkeley, for his researches in cryptogamic botany; a Royal Medal to John Peter Gassiot for his researches on the voltaic battery and current.
