DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: James Alderson; George Busk; Sir George Everest; Hugh Falconer; John Hall Gladstone; Henry Bence Jones; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; William Pole; William Sharpey; Archibald Smith; Henry John Stephen Smith; George Gabriel Stokes; Thomas Watson; Charles Wheatstone; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. New Members of Council made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Reappointment of the Library Committee, with membership and terms of reference. List of appointments to the Government Grant Committee. Mr. Huxley and Porfessor Sylvester appointed to the Scientific Relief Committee. The Treasurer reported that notices had been received from the London and South Western Railway Company, and the Finchley, Willesden and Acton Railway Company, of applications to Parliament affecting the Acton Estate, and that dissent was to be expressed. The salary of Mr. Wheatley, the Assistant Librarian, to be increased to £125 per annum. Letter from Harry Lobb requesting the use of woodblocks on behalf of Dr. Beale, for publication in The Electrician, granted on condition of direct application from the author. Letter from Dr. Elliott Hoskins F.R.S. of Guernsey, requesting copies of the Greenwich Meteorological Observations from 1849 onward, granted. The Treasurer authorised to draw £30 for the expenses of the Catalogue of Scientific Memoirs.
