DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: James Alderson; George Busk; Sir George Everest; Hugh Falconer; John Hall Gladstone; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Henry Bence Jones; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; William Pole; William Sharpey; Henry John Stephen Smith; George Gabriel Stokes; Thomas Watson; the Reverend Robert Willis; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. The Treasurer submitted a draft agreement for letting the Royal Society's lands at Mablethorpe to Mrs. Lyall, widow of the late tenant, for seven years at £126 per annum rent, approved. The thanks of the President and Council were given to Sir John Herschel for the presentation of manuscripts on nebulae, including sweep books of William Herschel. The Foreign Secretary noted the vacancy in the list of Foreign Members caused by the death of Baron Plana of Turin. Grants of Philosophical Transactions to the Academy of Sciences of Bologna, the Library of the University of Melbourne and the Library of McGill College, Montreal: Philosophical Transactions and Proceedings presented to the Public Museum of Moscow. The Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Observatory and Hydrographic Office in Washington applied for numbers of Proceedings. List of bills for payment, for surveying at Mablethrope and for store-room shelving.
