Commencing with a list of Council members present: James Alderson; George Busk; Sir George Everest; Hugh Falconer; John Hall Gladstone; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Henry Bence Jones; James Clerk Maxwell; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; William Pole; William Sharpey; Archibald Smith; Henry John Stephen Smith; George Gabriel Stokes; James Joseph Sylvester; Thomas Watson; Charles Wheatstone; the Reverend Robert Willis; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. List of President, Officers and Members of Council to be recommended for election at the Anniversary Meeting, to serve in the ensuing year. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: the Copley Medal to be awarded to Charles Darwin for important researches in geology, zoology and botanical physiology; a Royal Medal awarded to Jacob Lockhart Clarke for researches in the spinal cord and brain; a Royal Medal to Warren De La Rue for observations of the total eclipse of 1860 and improvements in astronomical photography; the Rumford Medal to John Tyndall for researches in the absorption and radiation of heat by gases and vapours. The letter of Dr. Stenhouse was read and it was resolved not to repeal the current Statute on admission of strangers to Royal Society meetings. £25 granted in aid of the extension of the parish church at Acton. Philosophical Transactions and Proceedings presented to the Royal Observatory of Florence. Philosophical Transactions volumes granted to the Library of the Royal College of Physicians. Nomination of auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. List of salaries and wages to be paid to Officers and staff of the Royal Society. List of bills for payments, for engraving and printing.
