Commencing with a list of Council members present: James Alderson; George Busk; Sir George Everest; John Peter Gassiot; John Edward Gray; Thomas Archer Hirst; Sir Henry Holland; Henry Bence Jones; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; Sir Roderick Impey Murchison; William Odling; William Pole; the Reverend Bartholomew Price; Sir John Rennie; William Sharpey; Edward Henry Stanley, Lord Stanley; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. A letter of thanks was read from the President and Council of the Royal Geographical Society for transmission of the Royal Society's resolutions on a North Polar expedition. Lord Dufferin was granted an extension of time for admission to the Fellowship. The selection of candidates for election to the Fellowship was discussed and adjourned. Mr. Sylvester requested the return of drawings belonging to his Philosophical Transactions paper On Newton's rule, granted. The repeal of Chapter 1 Section 4 of the Statutes relating to the election of Royal Fellows was proposed by Sir Henry Holland, for the next meeting: it was then agreed that the proposed draft of the Statute was to be read at that time. A request from the London Committee of the Cambridge Local Examinations to use the Meeting Room for distribution of certificates was granted. Parts of the Philosophical Transactions and Proceedings granted to the Royal Academy of Sciences of Madrid. Dr. Hirst gave notice of an application for £25 from the Donation Fund in aid of Professor Sylvester for the construction of an algebraic surface model. Letter from Dr. Aiken applying for £40 for experiments in the conversion of heat rays to visible light, postponed until the next Council. List of bills for china, printing and lithography.
