Commencing with a list of Council members present: John Couch Adams; James Alderson; George Busk; Sir George Everest; John Peter Gassiot; John Edward Gray; Thomas Archer Hirst; Sir Henry Holland; Henry Bence Jones; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; Sir Roderick Impey Murchison; William Odling; William Pole; Sir John Rennie; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Consideration of actions in consequence of the death of Henry Christy, a candidate recommended for election to the Fellowship: following a ballot, Mr. Fleeming Jenkin was selected, his name to be added to the list sent to the Fellowship, with an extract from Council Minutes. List of candidates for the award of Royal Society Medals. The President stated that he had been consulted by Mr. Milner Gibson, President of the Board of Trade, on arrangements following the death of Admiral Robert Fitzroy: full text of his memorandum entered into the minutes. The President referred to the desire expressed at recent meetings on the matter of navigation and the magnetism of iron ships. Draft letter from Edward Sabine, Royal Society, to Thomas Milner Gibson, President of the Board of Trade, with an extended memorandum on compass adjustment and research into the deviation of the compass in iron ships, full text entered into the minutes. Resolved that Sir William Logan be allowed lapsed volumes of Philosophical Transactions for presentation to the Scientific Library at Montreal. Application from the Trustees of the Melbourne Public Library for a grant of Philosophical Transactions and Proceedings, deferred upon enquiry regarding acccess to copies in the University Library and Observatory. Application from the Caesarian Academy of Naturalists for volumes of Philosophical Transactions, agreed. Proceedings to be granted to the Ateneo Veneto and to the Dudley and Midland Geological and Scientific Society, as exchanges for their journals. Letter from Dr. Aiken in reference to a grant from the Donation Fund: his application put to the vote was not acceeded to. List of bills for payment for lithography and for paper.
