DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: James Alderson; George Busk; Sir George Everest; John Peter Gassiot; John Edward Gray; Thomas Archer Hirst; Sir Henry Holland; Henry Bence Jones; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; Sir Roderick Impey Murchison; William Odling; Sir John Rennie; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Report on the work of the Committee to consider the letter of Mr. Farrer on the future of the Meteorological Department, with a draft letter of reply, full text entered into the minutes; including responses to the nine specific questions posed by the Board of Trade; the letter approved and to be transmitted by the President. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: list of candidates for the award of medals, proposed and seconded with citations. Report of the Library Committee, giving an account of progress on the Catalogue of Scientific Memoirs: the report approved and an advance of £50 was made to meet expenses. Minute of the Scientific Relief Committee recommending a grant of £50 to be placed at the disposal of the President of the Geographical Society for the benefit of an applicant, approved; £267 14s. for the Fund to be invested in new 3 per cent consols. Dr. R. Lee to be allowed to copy his paper on the nerves of the liver and Mr. Brayley to copy his paper on geological philosophy. Letter from the Societe Entomologique de Paris requesting journal volumes and an exchange arrangement, acceded to. Dr. Roscoe's paper on a method of meteorological registration of the chemical action of daylight appointed the Bakerian Lecture. The Royal Geographical Society granted the use of the Meeting Room in Burlington House for their evening meetings in the session. The Treasurer authorised to purchased £1,000 of 3 per cent Consols and authorised to pay accounts for coal during the recess. All books belonging to the Society to be returned to the Library on or before 31 July. Leave of absence granted to the Assistant Secretary. James Cockle, Sir F.L. McClintock, Mr. G.H. Thwaites and Lieutenant-Colonel Walker were granted leave to defer their attendance for admission to the Fellowship. List of bills for payment for printing and binding.
