DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: James Alderson; George Busk; Sir George Everest; John Peter Gassiot; John Edward Gray; Thomas Archer Hirst; Sir Henry Holland; Henry Bence Jones; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; William Odling; the Reverend Benjamin Price; Sir John Rennie; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Report of the Government Grant Committee in the form of minutes of the meeting of 29 June 1865, full text entered into the minutes: progress reports on grant-funded research were made by Mr. Mallet, Dr. Richardson and Professor Tyndall; lists of applications for grants and a provisional list of grant awards following discussion, confirmed by Council. Correspondence with the Board of Trade on ship magnetism, and on the Meteorological Department, ordered to be published in the Proceedings. Proceedings granted to the London Library. List of bills for payment for advertising and gas. Mr. Gassiot stated that having had a spectroscope constructed, he now desired the intervention of Council to gain permission to make observations on one of H.M. ships: the President requested to communicate with the Admiralty on the subject on Mr. Gassiot's behalf.
