Mr. Gassiot appointed to the Scientific Relief Committee. Letter from Robert Hall, Admiralty, 27 November 1872, to the Secretary of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: giving thanks for the communication on the research objectives of HMS Challenger and inviting President and Council, and members of the Circumnavigation Committee, to inspect the vessel at Sheerness; a saloon carriage would be ordered to take the party by rail from Victorian Station on 6 December, to be met by the naval hydrographer. The Secretary noted a request from the Royal Academy to erect an arcade, referred to the House Committee: the committee recommended acceding to Mr. Smirke's proposal, on conditions including secure lighting for the basement and ground floor, and subject to the consent of the Linnean Society.
