DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; George Busk; Robert Bellamy Clifton; Thomas Archer Hirst; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; William Hallowes Miller; Joseph Prestwich; Francis Sibson; George Gabriel Stokes; Major-General Richard Strachey; Isaac Todhunter; Sir Charles Wheatstone; the President,, Sir George Biddell Airy, in the chair; followed by the Treasurer and Vice-President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Report of the Soiree Committee, full text entered into the minutes: 1,500 invitation cards were sent out and the number of visitors to the 26 April conversazione was over 500, with favourable press notices; expenditure was £49 19s; lighting was provided gratuitously by Mr. Silber, testing his improved burner, which provided 'surprisingly brilliant illumination'. Georg Adolph Erman of Berlin added to the list of candidates for Foreign Membership. A shortlist of candidates for Foreign Membership was made, from which five would be selected at the next Council meeting. Candidates for Royal Society medals suggested for adjudication, names to be proposed and seconded at the June meeting of Council. Letter from the Under-Secretary of State for India, enclosing correspondence between Colonel Walker and the Indian Government on the subject of pendulum experiments. Dr. Carter requested permission to copy his paper on urinary calculi, granted. List of bills for payment for printing, bookbinding, and gas.
