TitleLetters on gel filtration, arranged by Douglas Robert Wilkie
CreatorWilkie; Douglas Robert (1922 - 1998); physiologist
Date1970-1971
DescriptionFile of letters received and sent by Wilkie, previously labelled 'gel filtration letters', including:

One letter from Wilkie to Professor H. Determan, seeking recommendations for further reading of his and his wife's (June Wilkie) interest in the theory of gel chromatography, particularly as he is struggling to find a generally accepted theory to account for the shape of the observed peaks. Explains that his own work is concerned with striated muscle and June's with the physiology of the foetus and newborn, dated 27 February 1970. Includes Determan's response, dated 16 March 1970.

Two copies of a letter from Wilkie to Professor Ogston, seeking expert advice on the theory of gel chromatography. Comments that Jume Hill recalls an occasion when Ogston stimulated discussion about the shape of the peaks and the problem being whether they corresponded to a true Gaussian distribution. Whilst reading on the subject, Wilkie was unable to find a generally accepted theory to account for the shape of observed peaks, which are not precisely Gaussian. Explains they devised a computer simulation based on the simple assumptions that the volume of gel accessible to a given solute depends on its molecular weight and that the movement of solute into and out of the gel was impeded by a simple diffusion barrier. The behaviour of the computer model imitated that of real columns, and they wrote a paper on these findings. Informs that since writing the paper they have become concerned about the relative magnitudes of the various sources of variance. Requests for Ogston to look at their manuscript and offer an opinion on whether it is fit for publication. The letter is dated 6 May 1970. Appended is Ogston's response, dated 12 May 1970, which also includes an attached paper titled 'An Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of Boundary Spreading in Gel Chromatography' by G. E. Hibberd, A. G. Ogston, and D. J. Winzor.

One letter from Wilkie to Dr. D. J. Winzor, Department of Biochemistry, University of Queensland, seeking an opinion as to whether it is worth submitting for publication a shortened version of his and June Wilkie's theory on gel filtration, dated 3 July 1970.

A follow up letter from Wilkie to Dr. D. J. Winzor, dated 15 March 1970, and Winzor's response, dated 15 March 1970, detailing the difficulties he encountered during his investigation.

Also included are four photographic prints of a graph depicting time intervals and volume emerging
