TitleScientific correspondence between Douglas Robert Wilkie and Francis D. Carlson
CreatorWilkie; Douglas Robert (1922 - 1998); physiologist
Date1960-1965
DescriptionFile of letters exchanged between Wilkie and Francis D. Carlson, of the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, dating 1960-1965. Includes Carlson's request for Wilkie's input on an uncorrected preprint of his next paper on muscle mechanochemistry, which he submitted to the Journal of General Physiology. Following its publication, Carlson sought further critical comments on specific aspects of his paper to enable him to make revisions, in particular relating to the 2.75 mcal. gm. heat figure utilised and the five points that form the basis of doubting the validity of the active state theory. Wilkie praised Carlson's work and offered detailed and specific advice to assist with strengthening the paper.
Also included are arrangements for Carlson to visit Wilkie and utilise the departmental instrument room, equipped with a good spectrophotometer; a copy of a letter from Archibald Vivian Hill FRS, to Mommaerts, on the chemical basis of a negative delayed heat production in muscle; notes titled 'AFH comments on isotonic paper; letters discussing calculations of chemical data and associated discrepancies, including graphs and handwritten notes; analysis of experiment results; Calrson discussing A. V. Hill's book and Hill' criticism of their work, commenting on efforts to clear up heat measurement problems by using a gradient calorimeter, and updating on an upcoming Biophysical Society meeting, which he is to Chair.
