TitleGeneral scientific and professional correspondence file of Douglas Robert Wilkie for the years 1950-1955
CreatorWilkie; Douglas Robert (1922 - 1998); physiologist
Date1950-1955
DescriptionFile of letters received by Douglas Robert Wilkie between 1950 and 1955. Topics covered include the publication and revision of scientific articles and books; Wilkie's contribution of a chapter to the fourth edition of Winton & Bayliss's Human Physiology, 1955; exchange of scientific advice; methods of applying the characteristic equation to the isotonic shortening of a muscle over its whole length; load-velocity;

Notable letters, from significant correspondents are described below:

Letter from Archibald Vivian Hill FRS to Mrs June Hill, in relation to the Advances in Colloid Science journal, enquiring whether Wilkie recalls a paper on the decrease of volume caused by stretching a resting muscle, dated 2 November 1951.

List of items for an upcoming BA session, enquiring whether Wilkie wishes to have any lantern slides made, enclosing a letter from Jean Hansen, who refers to electron micrographs of helix formation, dated 16 August 1952.

German language letter from Weber to Archibald Vivian Hill, dated 13 February 1953, in which Weber acknowledges a critique of the ATP-splitting rate in a model, noting the model’s inability to regulate splitting rate like muscle. Weber plans to address this in future publications, emphasising the potential for a higher ATP-splitting rate during shortening, which could impact efficiency calculations. Requests information on electron microscope images of smooth muscle lacking cross-striations, as this would impact the proposal concerning membrane excitation and ATP explosion.
