Citation | Graduated 20th Wrangler in 1859 - Professor of Exp Physics & lecturer on Astronomy & Nat Philosophy for 5 years, at Glasgow; & since 1871 at Newcastle. - Life Member of the Brit Association, of which he has been Secretary & V Pres of Sect A - For 16 years Sec of the Luminous Meteor Com & for 7 years Chairman of the Rock Conductivity Com of that body. - Well known by his constant labours in Meteoric Astronomy (as also in Meteorology & Spectroscopy) in which his collation of observations & comparison with cometary paths have contributed much to the present state. The R Soc Cat shows 60 titles on these subjects from his pen - But his best claim is - unstinted self-devotion to scientific culture among the artizans of the North. |
