| Citation | Eminently distinguished as an inventor and engineer. By his invention of the compound steam turbine he has made it practicable to use steam economically in an enginee without reciprocating parts. He has adapted the steam turbine successfully to dynamo driving and other uses, and his recent application of it to marine propulsion is a new departure of particular interest. In developing his inventions he has shown much scientific knowledge and experimental skill. Author of a number of papers on the steam turbine, its theory and its applications, in - Proc Inst Mech Eng, 1888; Trans of the North-East Coast Inst of Engineers and Shipbuilders, 1887; Inst of Civil Engineers, Conference, 1897; Trans Inst Naval Architects, 1887; Inst of Marine Engineering, 1897. Has investigated experimentally the action of high-speed screw propellers (Trans Inst Nav Arch, April, 1897); also the 'Behavour of Carbon at High Temperatures and under Great Pressures' (Proc Roy Soc, Phil Mag, sept, 1893). |
