Citation | Professor of Pathology, University of Manchester. Distinguished as an experimental pathologist and physiologist, particularly by his researches on the physiology and pathology of respiration, the volume of the blood in health, in so-called anaemia, and in other forms of disease, the action of oxygen at high pressure, and the reactions between staining reagents and the tissues. Author of the following, among other papers: - 'The Physiological Action of Air vitiated by Respiration' (Journ of Pathol, 1892 and 1893, with Dr Haldane); 'On some Effects of Thyroidectomy' (Journ of Physiol, 1894); 'The Oxygen Tension of Arterial Blood in Man,' and 'The Absorption of Oxygen by the Lungs' (ibid, 1896 and 1897, with Dr Haldane); 'The Influence of Pathological Conditions on the Absorption of Oxygen by the Lungs' (ibid, 1898); 'The Pathological Effects due to Increase of Oxygen Tension in the Air Breathed' (ibid, 1899); 'The Mass and Oxygen Capacity of the Blood in Man' (ibid, 1900, with Dr Haldane); 'The Volume and Oxygen Capacity of the Blood in Amaemia and other Conditions' (Trans Pathol Soc, 1900 and 1902); 'An Investigation of the Conditions affecting the occurrence of Typhoid Fever in Belfast' (Journ of Hygiene, 1904); 'The Staining of Fat with Neutral Aniline Dyes' (Journ of Pathol, 1906); 'The Simultaneous Staining of Neutral Fat and Fatty Acids by Oxazine Dyes' (ibid, 1907); 'The Principles Underlying Wright's Method of Staining Medullated Nerve' (ibid, 1908, with Dr Mair). Author of several official Reports on questions of Public Health, and has served on the Irish Universities Royal Commission and the Home Office Committee on Humidified Air in Cotton Factories. |
