Title | Harker, John Allen: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Assistant in the National Physical Laboratory. Fellow of Owens College, Manchester. Dr Harker, after a distinguished course at the Owens College, Manchester, and work in Germany under Prof L Meyer, proceeded in 1897, under the direction of the Kew Committee, to Sevres, to investigate the relation between the scales of the platinum and gas thermometers. Since 1901 he has held his present post and has been in charge of the Thermometric Department, which he has organised with great skill. He has established a scale of temperatures of high accuracy up to 1,500 degrees C, and devised numerous methods for exact measurements of temperature. He is the author of the following among other papers: 'On a Comparison of the Platinum and Gas Thermometers' (Phil Trans, 1901, with Dr Chappuis); 'On the High Temperature Standards of the National Physical Laboratory' (ibid, 1904); 'On a New Apparatus for determining the Freezing Points of Thermometers' (Proc Roy Soc, 1896); 'On a direct reading Potentiometer for Thermoelectric work' (Phil Mag, 1903); various Chemical and Physical papers (Proc Lit Phil Soc, Manchester). |
