Description | Date stamp on reverse of certificate |
Citation | Professor and Director of the Brewing School of the Birmingham University. Distinguished as a worker in the borderland region of Chemistry and Biology. The first to draw attention, by his systematic pioneer enquiries of 1886-1887, to the relative activity of aerobic organisms ('Bacterium aceti' and 'xylinum') in promoting oxidation of carbohydrates. The first to call attention to the influence of contentration on the rate of hyrolysis of cane sugar by invertase, and to demonstrate a linear rate during the earlier period of change. By his recent discovery of the existence in the covering of certain seeds of a semi-permeable membrane of remarkable selective power, and by his careful investigation of the properties of this membrane, he has not only opened up a new field in vegetable physiology, but has obtained data of peculiar value in the interpretation of osmotic phenomena. Author of numerous papers, among which the following may be mentioned: - 'The Chemical Action of Pure Cultivations of 'Bacterium aceti'' (Journ Chem Soc, 1886); 'On an Acetic Ferment which forms Cellulose' (ibid); 'Further Communications on the Chemical Actions of 'Bacterium aceti'' (ibid, 1887); 'Note on the Cellulose formed by 'Bacterium xylinum'' (ibid, 1887); 'Influence of oxygen and Concentration on Alcoholic Fermentation' (ibid,1892); 'The Specific Character of the Fermention Functions of Yeast Cells' (ibid, 1894); 'Fermentative Power' (Centralblatt fur Bakteriologie, 1897); 'Enzyme Action' (Journ Chem Soc, 1902); 'The Influences regulating the Reproductive Functions of 'Saccharomyces cererisioe'' (ibid, 1905); 'The Liberation of Tyrosine during Tryptic Proteolysis' (ibid, 1906); 'On the Existence of a Semi-permeable Membrane enclosing the Seeds of Some of the Graminae' (Annals of Botany, 1907); 'The Selective Permeability of the Covering of the Seeds of 'Hordeum vulgare'' (Proc Roy Soc, B, 1909). |
