Title | Pocock, Reginald Innes: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Superintendent of the Gardens and Curator of Mammals Zoological Society of London. Distinguished as a systematic Zoologist who has added greatly to knowledge of the Arthropoda (chiefly Arachnida and Myriapoda and their subordinate groups) and of Mammalia (chiefly Primates, Equidae and Felidae). He has described a large number of new genera and species, and made many new observations on structure which he has applied to classification. He has worked out the geographical distribution of the Arachnida with special reference to their area of origin and lines of migration and the evidence thus given as to past changes in continential land areas. He has paid special attention to coloration in relation to environment and affinity, particularly in Equidae and Felidae, and has published valuable observations on reproductive processes in Primates. Author of more than 200 published memoirs, including the following : - 'Paloeontological': - 'On the Scottish Silurian Scorpion' (Quart Journ Micros Sci, 1901); ''Eophrynus' and allied Carboniferous Arachnida' (Geol Mag, 1902); 'Faunistic' and 'Systematic': - Volume 'Arachnida' in Blanford's Fauna of British India (1900); Volume 'Arachnida' in Godman and Salvin's Biologia Centriali-Americana (1902); 'A Revision of Monkeys of the genus 'Cercopithecus' (Proc Zool Soc, 1907); 'Morphological': - 'A New and Annectant Type of Chilopod' (Quart Journ Micros Sci, 1902); 'Studies on the Arachnid 'Entosternite'' (ibid, 1902); 'On some Points in the Structure of the Alimentary and Nervous Systems of the Pedipalpi' (Proc Zool Soc, 1902). |
