| Citation | Superintendent of the Department of Engineering in the National Physical Laboratory. Distinguished for his skill in devising and carrying out researches in various branches of engineering. His investigation into Wind Pressure on Structures and the Effects of Alternating Stress on Materials of Construction have proved of very high value to engineers, and the successful development of the Engineering Department of the National Physical Laboratory is largely due to him. He is the author of the following among other papers: 'On the Passage of Heat between Metal Surfaces and Liquids in Contact with them' (Phil Trans, 1897); 'On the Efficency and Design Condensers' (Proc Inst Civil Eng, 1898, Telford Premium); 'The Resistance of Plane Surfaces in a Uniform Current of Air' (ibid, 1903, Telford Premium); 'The Resistance of Iron and Steel to Reversals of Direct Stress' (with Mr Bairstow, ibid, 1905, Stephenson Gold Medal); 'Experiments on Wind Pressure' (ibid, 1907); 'The Resistance of Materials to Impact' (with Mr Bairstow, Proc Inst Mech Eng, 1908); 'On the Resistance of Materials to Thin Plates and Models in a Current of Water' (Proc Inst Naval Architects, 1909, Premium Paper). |
