Title | Bairstow, Sir Leonard: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Date stamp on reverse |
Citation | Senior Assistant in the National Physical Laboratory Engineering Department. Author of papers on Elasticity - 'The Resistance of Materials to Impact' (with Dr Stanton) (Proc Inst Civ Eng, 1908); 'The Elastic Limits of Iron and Steel under Cyclical Variations of Stress' (Trans A, vol ccx). Since 1909 Mr Bairstow has been engaged chiefly on experimental work in Aeronautics. The development of the Aeronautical Laboratory at the National Physical Laboratory is in large measure his work; the methods employed and the apparatus used owe much to his initiative and skill. The main results of his work are published in the Technical Reports of the Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, and include (Rept 1909-1910), Experiments on the Resistance of Ballon Models and on the Efficiences of Certain Forms of Rudders, &c; (ibid, 1910-1911), further experiments on similar subjects and various researches on Propellers; (ibid, 1911-1912), (with Mr Melville Jones), Experiments on Models of Aeroplane Wings. In the Report for 1912-1913 are a series of papers dealing with the stability of Aeroplanes, including a method of determining by experiment the coefficients in the complete expression for the energy, with a numerical application to certain types of Areoplane; also a valuable contribution to the theory of the strength of the Aeroplane Structure, with directions for its application to actual machines. |
