Citation | 1851 Exhibition Scholar. Chemist. Director of the Herter Research Laboratories and Editor of the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Distinguished as a biological chemist. Dr Dakin, after completing his studies at the University of Leeds, worked at Heidelberg under Prof Kossel and at the Lister Institute. Subsequently he was appointed Assistant to Dr Herter,and after the death of the latter became Director of the Herter Laboratories, where he has since been continuously engaged on important research work on biochemical problems. The following is a summary of his more important investigations: - 'Progressive Chlorination of Toluene' (Trans Chem Soc, 1901-1903); 'Hydrolysis of Inactive Mandelic Esters by Lipase; Proteolytic Action of Kidney Enzyme and syntheses of Adrenalin and its Derivatives' (Journ Physiol Chem , 1903-1905); 'Occurrence and Composition of Protamines from Fish Spermatozoa and an Account of the New Enzyme 'Arginase'' (Zeit Physiol Chem 1905-1906). Dr Dakin's more recent work has been on the Oxidation and Reduction of Amino-Hydroxy and Ketonic Acids within and outside the Body, and is embodied in his Monograph on 'Oxidations and Reductions in the Animal Body' (Longmans) and in numerous contributions to the Journal of Biological Chemistry. His work on the Racemisation of Proteins has furnished new means of studying their structure, and the recent discovery of the enzyme 'Glyoxalase' and its anti-enzyme has shed new light on the catabolism of Glucose. |
