Citation | Professor of Chemistry, University of London, King's College. Dean of the Faculty of Science and Member of the Senate of the University of London. Distinguished as a teacher and investigator in physical and inorganic chemistry. In the earlier part of his career he occupied himself largely with the investigation of phosphorescence and made many important observations. Before Rontgen's announcement of the discovery of the X-rays, Professor Jackson had exhibited, but not published , the occurrence of phosphorescence of solids outside the Crookes's tube and he devised the form of X-ray tube which immediately became the standard model. Papers on phosphorescence appeared in the Transactions of the Chemical Society, and in the Philosophical Magazine. He carried out an original investigation, followed by a report, for the Dean and Chapter of Westminster and also of Canterbury, on the nature, cause and prevention of decay in stonework. His Cantor Lectures on detergents and bleaching agents, delivered to the Society of Arts and published in 1907, gave new and valuable information on the physical and chemical theory of the use of these substances. In September, 1914, Professor Jackson began an investigation on the conditions for producing most of the varieties of glass used in laboratories and in some of the arts, including also special optical glasses. This laborious investigation, pursued with unwearied effort and remarkable skill, both on the theoretical and experimental sides, has achieved signal success, and not only solved the practical difficulties of grave national importance which arose at the outbreak of war in relation to the supply of glass, but has provided a scientific basis for the permanent establishment in this country of branches of the glass industry which will hence-forward be recognized as vital to the State. |
