Citation | Professor of Metallurgy in the Imperial College of Science and Technology, South Kensington. Distinguished for his researches in Metallurgy and more especially for his work on High-Speed Tool Steel, Iron, Carbon, and Copper Alloys. Ex-Investigator to the Alloys Research Committee, and one of the founders of the Institute of Metals. Member of the Board of Inventions and Research. Member of Sub-Committee on the Erosion of Propellers, the cause of which was definitely ascertained. In July, 1915, dealt with a problem for the Government in connexion with cartridge metal arising out of shortage of zinc. Chairman of the Corresion Research Committee on Condenser Tubes. Chairman of a Committee on the Corrosion of Aeroplane Parts under the Air Board. Has published, among others, the following papers: - 'The Range of Solidification and the Critical Ranges of Iron-Carbon Alloys' (with B F E Keeling, Iron and Steel Inst, 1904); 'Report to the Alloys Research Committee on the Properties of a Series of Iron-Nickel-Manganese-Carbon Alloys' (with R A Hadfield and P Longmuir, Inst Mech Eng, 1905); 'The Types of Structure and the Critical Ranges on Heating and Cooling of High-Speed Tool Steels under varying Thermal Treatment' (Iron and Steel Inst, 1905); 'Report to the Alloys Research Committee on the Properties of the Alloys of Aluminium and Copper' (with C A Edwards, Inst Mech Eng, 1907); 'The Freezing Point of Iron' (Iron and Steel Inst); 'The Permanent Change of Volume of Cast Irons after Repeated Heatings' (with H F Rugan, Manch Lit and Phil Soc, 1909); 'The Production of Casting to Withstand High Pressures' (with C A Edwards, Inst Mech Eng, 1910); 'A New Critical Point in Copper-Zinc Alloys: its Interpretation and Influence on their Properties' (with C A Edwards, Inst of Metals, 1911); 'The Liquidus Curves and Constitution Diagram of the Ternary System, Aluminium-Copper-Zinc' (with C A Edwards, Int Zeits fur Metall, 1912); 'The Hardening of Metals with special reference toIron and its Alloy' (with Prof Edwards, 1914). |
