Citation | Director of the Geological Survey of the Union of South Africa. Distinguished for original work in geology. Engaged on the Geological Survey of Cape Colony from 1896 to 1917, and now Director of the Union Survey. His field work is in great part represented on sheets of the Cape Geological Map. Descriptions of areas mapped are published in Annual Reports of the Cape Geological Commission from 1896 to 1911, and Reports of the Union Geological Survey for 1912. The more important results relate to the Uitenhage District (Rept, 1905); Griqualand West, etc (Repts, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908); and the West and North-West Districts (Repts, 1911, 1912). His chief papers appearing in other than official publications are: - 'Geological History of the Gouritz River System' (Trans Phil Soc SA, vol xiv); 'Glacial Beds in the Table Mountain Series' (ibid vol xi and vol xvi); 'Geitsi Gubib, an old Volcano' (Trans Roy Soc SA, vol v); 'Geology of Namaquland' (Trans Geol Soc SA, vol xv and xviii); 'Copper Deposits of Namaquland' (Address, Geol Soc SA, 1916). He has also written the 'Geology of Cape Colony' (8vo, Lond, 1905, pp xi-463; 2nd ed with A L du Toit, Lond, 1909) |
