Citation | Managing Director of Messrs Crosfield and Sons, Warrington. Distinguished as a worker in organic chemistry, especially on the biological side, and on account of the service he has rendered in elucidating the nature of enzymes and the manner in which they act. The configurational connexion now recognized between the two isodynamic forms of glucose and the two series of natural glucosides was established by him. Has shown that maltose can be synthesized from glucose. Has made valuable observations on the distribution of enzymes in plants and on the stimulation of enzyme action by hormones. His work with Prof Keeble on plant oxidases afforded confirmation by chemical means of the correctness of the interpretation students of the inheritance of Medelian characters have placed upon their observations. A pupil of the late Prof J H van't Hoff and of Prof Emil Fisher, he was associated with the former in his earlier work on the equilibrium of salts (particularly gypsum) with their solutions; and with the latter in his early researches on glucosides and the synthesis of sugars. Amongst his numerous publications may be mentioned the following: - 'Das Halbhydrat von Schwefelsaurem Kalk CaSO4 . 1/2 H2O' (with J H van't Hoff) (Sitzungs K Akad Wissen, Berlin, 1900); 'Ueber die Isomeren Acetohalogenderivate des Traubenzuckers, und die Synthese der Glucoside' (with Emil Fischer) (1 Bericht, 1901; ibid, 2, 1902; ibid, 3, 1902); 'Synthese Eineger Neuer Disaccharide' (ibid, 1902); 'Studies on Enzyme Action' (1, Trans Chem Soc, 1903; 2, Proc Roy Soc, 1904; 3, ibid, 1904; 7, ibid, 8, ibid, 1905); 'The Function of Hormones' (ibid, 1910); 16, 'Enzyme Action' (with F Keeble); 'Distribution of Oxidases in Plants' (ibid, 1912; Journ Genetics, 1912). Author of work 'The Simple Carbohydrates and Glucosides' (1910. 3rd Ed, 1918; German Ed, 1912) and of numerous articles in 'Thorpe's Dictionary of Chemistry,' 'Allen's Organic Analysis,' &c. |
