Title | Blackett, Patrick Maynard Stuart, Baron Blackett of Chelsea: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to Physics, especially for his study by the expansion method of collisions of alpha-particules with atomic nuclei. He was the first to obtain reliable photographs showing the artificial disintegration of the nitrogen nucleus and indicating that the alpha-particle was captured in the process. He has done much to develop the technique of accurate and rapid photography of the tracks of alpha and beta particules and has obtained results of great importance by this means. He has also taken an important share in developing a new and promising method of measuring specific heats and their variation with temperature. |
