CitationDistinguished for his researches on various types of cast iron, carbon steels and alloy steels. The more important of these deal with methods of improving the quality of steel ingots, with the mechanism of failure of metals under internal and prolonged stress, with the prevention of corrosion of metals, and with the development of heat-resisting and acid-resisting steels. He has played a most important part in securing interest in and appreciation of research in the British steel industry. Much of his work, especially that carried out for the Services, is of a confidential nature and has not been published.
