TitleEwins, Arthur James: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationResearch Chemist (Industrial). Distinguished for chemical researches in connexion with pharmaceutical industry. From 1904-1914 published from the Wellcome Research Laboratories, in collaboration or alone, in important researches on alkaloids (ergot, laburnum, etc), amines from aminoacids, choline esters; first isolated acetylcholine from a natural source, identified 'artificial muscarine' as nitrosocholine. Since 1915, as research chemist and director of research to May & Barker Ltd., has produced many new synthetic remedies, including some of the most important in recent years - 'M & B 693' (pyridylsupphanilamide) used in pneumonia, meningitis etc, and a new series of aromatic diamidines, of great promise in several important tropical diseases.
