Title | Pilgrim, Henry Guy Ellcock: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Palaeontologist and geologist. Superintendent of the Geological Survey of India, 1920-30. Distinguished for his researches in fossil mammals, which have led to several important generalizations published in his later memoirs and papers. His valuable memoirs on fossil mammals from India show for the first time that the Siwalik formation comprises deposits of various ages from Lower Miocene to Pleistocene. He has also made other fundamental contributions to the geology of India, notably the Himalayas and the Persian Gulf. Since retirement he has studied in the British Museum (NH) and in the American Museum of Natural History, and published valuable results. |
