| Title | Whitehead, John Henry Constantine: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
| Description | Date stamp on reverse |
| Citation | He has made distinguished contributions to several branches of pure mathematics. In combinatorial topology he has given a valuable new classification of complexes, and made a detailed study of its invariants; and his topological work has led him to discoveries in the theory of abstract groups and of group-rings. In the theory of continuous groups he has proved a theorem of great importance on the structure of infinitesimal groups. He is joint author with O Veblem of a Cambridge Mathematical Tract on the Foundations of Differential Geometry. |
