Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Director of Research of the North of England Branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Distinguished as a biochemist, particularly in the field of tissue metabolism. By his development of the first practical method of measuring the respiratory quotient of tissue slices he was able to demonstrate the real nature of the damage to respiration in certain types of malignant tissue. Over a number of years he has made numerous other contributions to the analysis of the metabolism of normal and malignant tissue. More recently he has been responsible for two important discoveries - namely, the fermentability of pentosephosphoric acids by yeast, and the occurrence of citric acid as a significant constituent of bone. His work is characterised both by originality and by a high degree of accuracy in execution. |
