Title | Ford, Edmund Brisco: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | M.A., D.Sc. Distinguished for a remarkable series of genetical experiments, principally with crustaceans and lepidoptera; and for a number of expositions in book form. Among points to which Ford's observations have largely contributed are the existence and significance of genes controlling the time of onset and rate of development of processes, the relations connecting variability and abundance, the absolute numbers of natural populations, the experimental demonstration of dominance-modification by selection, the genetics, chemistry and taxonomic distribution of lepidopterous pigments, and the elucidations of industrial melanism. Ford's work is characterised by critical penetration of genetic situations and possibilities, and he has done much to dispel widespread misunderstandings of the relations between genetics and theories of evolution. |
