Title | Redman, Roderick Oliver: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | M.A., PhD. Formerly Fellow of St. John's College and Assistant Director of Solar Physics Observatory, Cambridge. Distinguished for fundamental contributions to observational astronomy, amongst others the galactic notation of faint K-type stars, the total magnitudes of and the projected intensity distribution in elliptical nebulae, the first determination of the equivalent widths of lines across the disc of an eclipsing binary, and the standard spectrophotometric study of control line intensities in the solar spectrum. Has designed much useful spectroscopic equipment. His work is characterized by the thoroughness and variety of its attack, and by the permanence of its results. |
