| Citation | Distinguished for his researches in the foundations and applications of abstract algebra. He has shown insight into the correspondences existing between diverse mathematical theories and has considerably extended our knowledge of nonassociative algebras of generalized determinants and of group characters. His influence and inspiration have made University College, Swansea, a notable centre of algebraic research. He has published outstanding memoirs, in the Philosophical Transactions and in other leading journals, both alone and in collaboration with his pupil Littlewood. A list of papers is attached. |
