Title | Bisat, William Sawney: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | A brilliant amateur distinguished for his studies in Carboniferous Statigraphical Palaeontology. He propounded a zonal scheme based on goniatites, for which fossils in many cases he provided the original descriptions. This scheme has enabled considerable areas of grit, shale and limestone to be mapped and correlated more accurately than hitherto by the Geological Society and others. Bissat's work has proved an impetus to geologists in Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Russia and the U.S.A., where his results have been successfully utilized. He has also undertaken research of high quality in the glacial drifts of Yorkshire. In goniatite identification particularly, he has given others unstinted help. |
