| Title | Harris, Thomas Maxwell: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
| Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to palaeobotany and plant morphology. In 1926 he spent a year in East Greenland collecting Mesozoic plants and studying their distribution. He subsequently published his results in a series of papers which form the most complete study of the fossil flora of an area yet produced, many forms of great interest were described, more than half being new to science. This work cleared up the problem of the relations between the Rhaetic and Jurassic floras in the N. Hemisphere. He has subsequently made very important contributions to our knowledge of British Mesozoic plants with the aid of much improved technical methods, (Phil. Trans., Annals of Botany, B. M. publications) and this work is still in progress. It includes information of particular value concerning the Bryophyta, Cycadales and Caytoniales. All his work is of the highest quality and is characterised by considerable originality. His many contributions to the problems of plant evolution have gained for him an international reputation. |
