TitleBullen, Keith Edward: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished for work in Geophysics. Joint author of the Jeffreys-Bullen tables used since 1936 in the work of the International Seismological Summary. Made a detailed discussion of the density distribution in the Earth, finding in particular the change in density at a depth of bout 400km. Estimated the ellipticities of internal layers of equal density and their effect on the travel times of earthquake waves, thereby making it possible to determine times from observation with uncertainties of under 1 second instead of 4 to 7 seconds. Calculated the times of several reflected waves. Has made special studies of New Zealand earthquakes. (List of papers attached.)
