Title | Medawar, Sir Peter Brian: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Dr. Medawar has made outstanding contributions to knowledge of the processes of growth. By assaying the amount of an inhibitor needed to suppress growth in tissue culture of the chicken's heart, he has provided by far the most accurate measurements of the decline in growth energy that occurs with age. He has also greatly advanced the development of methods for the quantitative expression of growth processes, and especially those relevant to the analysis of changes in shape during development. He has also made considerable advances in knowledge of the processes involved in the grafting of tissues from one animal or man to another, and especially has shown the rate at which the host develops an immunity which ultimately causes the break-down of grafted tissues. Out of this work he has developed a general theory of the nature of transplantation immunity. |
