Title | Martyn, David Forbes: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to a wide variety of aspects of scientific radio. With Bailey gave the theoretical explanation of radio wave interaction, and with Squires discovered the relationship between anomalous short wave radio propagation and the Australian "coastal front." In a series of four papers published in the Proceedings has opened up a new field of theoretical work on the elucidation of ionospheric variations, based on a modified "dynamo" theory of ionospheric movements and supported on the experimental side by the identification of large solar and lunar tides. Has also developed a theory of solar thermal emission in the radio spectrum predicting coronal radiation (corresponding to a black body at a million degrees) at wavelengths of about 1 metre, and also "limb brightening" at centimetre wavelenths (sic). Both results have quickly received experimental confirmation. |
