CitationDistinguished for her research on the development and differentiation of tissues and rudiments of organs in vitro [underlined]. She was able to follow the development of the eye and ear from corresponding buds of fowl embryo and to obtain highly differentiated organs, although of small size, thus showing that normal histological differentiation does not depend upon vascular system, nerve connections, association with adjacent structure, or even normal cellular multiplication. In her extensive study of the development in vitro [underlined] of different skeletal structures such as rudiments of tibia, mandible, sternum and knee-joint, she determined the potencies of isolated rudiments, the mechanism of cartilage formation and of ossification, in relation to phosphatase activity. This work is of outstanding merit and is now recognised as one of the fundamental contributions to the knowledge of skeletogenesis. Other work of distinction includes the studies of the effect of X-rays upon tissues, cytological study of Jensen's rat sarcoma in cultures, micromanipulation applied to tissue cultures, the mechanism of wound healing in relation to phosphatase, the life cycle of avian tubercle bacilli and their interrelationship with animal cells in vitro [underlined]
