| Citation | Since 1935 Katz has made outstanding contributions to neurophysiology. His early demonstration of a subthreshold unpropagated response in nerve, contested at the time, is now generally accepted. His systematic study of muscle end-plate potentials, and his recent proof that a continuous discharge of miniature potentials occurs at rest, are of great interest. Working on muscle sense-organs he provided the first direct proof that impulses are started by local depolarisation. His investigations of giant nerve fibres and of the role of sodium in nerve conduction are important.
