TitlePugsley, Sir Alfred Grenville: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to structural theory, especially in the field of aeronautics, where he was a pioneer in the study of 'aero-elastic' problems ('wing-divergence', 'reversal of control', flutter, etc.) and in the statistical approach to problems of airworthiness. Has recently devised new methods for investigating suspension bridges, and by blending intuition with experiment and computation has greatly clarified the problem of their vibrations (underlined). His work combines analytical dexterity with the rarer gift of detecting the physical essentials of a problem.
