Title | Curran, Sir Samuel Crowe: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Degrees - M.A., B.Sc., Ph.D., D.Sc. Distinguished for contributions to experimental physics. Has made notable advances in electronic counting techniques; in particular has been primarily responsible for the development of the proportional counter as a quantitative instrument for the measurement of the energies of soft radiations. During the war years led group responsible for design of pulse modulations for centimetric radar (1940-44) and worked on ion-sources at Berkeley with Manhattan Projects where he also originated the electronic scintillation counter. Joint author with J.D. Craggs of book entitled "Counting Tubes" and has published over 50 papers and reports in most of which he was senior author. (List appended) |
