Title | Gaydon, Alfred Gordon: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for researches in Spectroscopy, particularly band and flame spectra. He studied with A.Fowler FRS the spectra of the afterglow in sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide (1934); with Dr. R. Pearse elucidated transitions in NiH and other hydrides (1937); published with Pearse an important memoir on 'Identifiction of Molecular Spectra'. Appointed Warren Research Fellow, his reaserches have added to knowledge of reactions on flames, including vibrations of long duration in carbon dioxide; chilled flames; atomic oxygen in flames; carbon formation, and low pressure flames. Author of 'Spectroscopy and Combustion' and of 'Dissociation energies and spectra of diatomic molecules' in the latter he deduced a value for predissociation energy of nitrogen which is now becoming generally accepted. |
