Title | Harris, Geoffrey Wingfield: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Dr. Harris has elaborated an elegant method for simulating in the living rabbit precisely demarcated areas in the hypothalamus, and observing the immediate and remote effects of the stimulus. By these means he has produced evidence that the two hormones of the neurohypophysis are released in proportions different from those in which they are found in extracts of the tissue. In connexion with pituitary anterior lobe function Dr Harris has demonstrated the wide distribution among vertebrates of the hypophysial portal vessels, and has shown that the release of anterior lobe hormones by electrical stimulation of the hypothalamus may be mediated by humoral transmission through this vascular pathway. He has recently given this view strong experimental support by showing that, in the hypophysectionized rat, grafts of anterior lobe tissue become functionally active only when they are so placed as to acquire vascular connexion with the hypophysial portal vessels. Distinguished for his contributions to the physiology of the hypothalamus and pituitary body. |
