Title | Lighthill, Sir Michael James: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Professor of Applied Mathematics, Manchester University. Discovered a method for designing airfoil shapes on which a given distribution of pressure is produced in an air stream. Developed the Modograph method which was devised for problems in supersonic flow so that it could be applied to the much more difficult problems in which both supersonic and subsonic regions occur in the same field of flow. Has discovered a method for calculating the intensity of noise emitted by turbulent and other unsteady motions of air. Lighthill's work displays scientific imagination as well as great analytical skill. |
