CitationWells is a comparative physiologist who has done distinguished work on invertebrates of several phyla. He has determined their tolerance for changes in the salinity and the ionic balance of the water surrounding them, and analysed the water relations of land molluscs.
He has worked largely on the lug-worm, determining its habits by elegant experiments, and showing that the rhythm which controls many of its activities arises in the oesophagus. Such spontaneous rhythmic activity has been shown by Wells to occur in many polychaets.
All Wells' work is directed to an understanding of the relation between the general physiology of invertebrates and their mode of life.
